TOP 10 VEHICLES IN THE CARIBBEAN: TURKS AND CAICOS ISLANDS
It is said that travel forms youth. For car enthusiasts of all kinds, they help to strengthen their automotive culture, because when you leave North America, you discover creations that you don’t even know exist.
As you can imagine, we wouldn’t miss the opportunity to bring you back some pictures of models seen during a visit to the Caribbean in February. On the menu are two galleries that present you with different realities. The first one is about one of the smallest islands of Turks and Caicos, Grand Turk. A second gallery will follow on some fascinating models seen on the islands of Curaçao and Aruba.
1 — Jeep Wrangler
No matter where you set foot on the planet, you’ll find Jeep Wranglers. And everywhere, the craze is the same. A vehicle as planetary as it is mythical. The rental companies that offer them to tourists abound and the latter are ready to pay the big price to explore a new country at the wheel of this adventurer.
Note this edition, with a right-hand drive. Many of the island’s vehicles come directly from Japan.
2 – Toyota Carina
The Toyota Carina is a car that was born in 1970 and whose career ended in 2001. It is normal that you don’t know it, since it has never been offered here. Elsewhere, it has always been seen as a four-door variant of the Celica, the model with which it shared its seats.
It can be seen as a cousin of the Corona, and also of the Corolla to a lesser extent. The model photographed was marketed from 1996 to 2001 and represented the seventh and last generation.
3 — Nissan Wingroad
The Wingroad station wagon is also a car that we would be hard pressed to know, as it has not been marketed here or in Europe. On the other hand, the Caribbean was on its list of export destinations, so we find it there. The edition captured on the spot was offered from 1999 to 2005 and was equipped with a 4-cylinder 2-litre engine.
4 – SsangYong Actyon Sport
At home, we identify the Korean automobile industry through the creations of Hyundai and Kia, but we shouldn’t forget the smaller firm SsangYong. The latter is the fourth largest in South Korea and since 2011, it is owned by the Indian manufacturer Mahindra.
As for the Actyon model, it’s primarily a compact SUV, but a pickup truck is also available.
Interestingly here, the vehicle’s licence plate indicates that it’s a local government model.
5 — Hummer… ou trappe à touristes
A miniature Hummer? Such a thing has never existed, of course. However, one company did not hesitate to exploit the name by promising Hummer excursions. When you see the car in disguise, you can’t help but smile.
6 — Nissan March
We will have known only one generation of the modern Nissan Micra, the one that the Japanese manufacturer has proposed to us from 2015 to 2019, inclusively (even if 2019 models will still be available this year).
Here’s what the previous generation looked like in Japan, the one offered between 2002 and 2010 elsewhere in the world.
7 — Mazda Demio
Back home, we know the Mazda Demio as the… Mazda2. In fact, before it became a sub-compact, it took the form of a small SUV. The photographed version belongs to the second generation, marketed between 2002 and 2007. And, as you can see, the rust problem that we experienced with the brand’s products during this period doesn’t spare the models that enjoy a much more pleasant climate. Note that salt has the ability to wreak havoc there. To protect your car there, it is often necessary to apply a sealant.
8 — Honda Inspire
The model you see in this photo is not a Honda Accord, but a model named Inspire. It’s actually a Japanese version of the seventh-generation Accord.
Throughout its history, the Inspire has sometimes been a derivative of an Acura and sometimes a Honda Accord. Production ceased in late 2012 with the arrival of the eighth generation Accord, but resumed in 2018 with the debut of the ninth.
9 — Toyota Vitz
Since its debut in the late 1990s in Japan, the model known as Echo, then Yaris in our country, has been known as the Vitz in Japan. In Canada, let’s remember that it made its debut in 2003 under the name Echo.
10 — Nissan Lafesta
The Nissan Lafesta is a family vehicle that was offered by Nissan on the Asian markets from 2004 to 2017. The name Festa is taken from the Italian and represents celebration, family moments, etc. It is based on Nissan’s C platform and its bases were also used for the Renault Megane, but also for the XTrail SUV we knew back home.
If we had photographed a second-generation model, you would have recognized it as the… Mazda5. Yes, Mazda had supplied the vehicle to its rival Nissan.
11 – Toyota Sprinter
The Toyota Sprinter is a variant of the Toyota Corolla. Only distributed in Asia, it was always intended to be a sportier version of the one that remains the best-selling model on the planet today. To trace its origins, you have to go back to 1968.
12 — Toyota Ractis
While sub-compact SUVs have been the law in Canada for the past few years, the format was introduced much earlier elsewhere on the planet. In 2005, Toyota introduced an SUV version of the Vitz, our Yaris, in Japan. The model was produced until the end of 2017.
13 — Mazda Demio
Here’s the Mazda Demio again, but this time in a sub-compact car configuration. This version has made a career under the name Mazda2 with us.
14 — Toyota Voxy
Let’s end our first Caribbean tour with the Voxy model at Toyota. In fact, this one is basically known as the Noah in the Asian markets. The Voxy version is a sportier variant of the model, a common practice in Japan. A more “luxurious” variant called Esquire is also a member of this family. This wagon can accommodate seven or eight people and is still produced for the markets there.

2018 Resolutions
Well hi there! Happy New Year!
Did everyone have a nice holiday season? Ready to get back to the grind? Yeah, me neither! I am, per usual, sick. I happen to always get sick right around the 1st of the year…a bit annoying. Sinuses/head cold and I am looking and sounding really attractive! I thought I was feeling better on Sunday…but I spoke too soon…
Anyways…wow did I start this new year post off on a negative note. New year same old Kelly!
Anywho, I thought I would do something that is extremely usual and put together some resolutions for the new year. I know this is a super novel idea, but once people hear about this concept I bet it will catch on.
This year is going to be a little different for us…in that a baby is coming in May and we have NO IDEA what to expect with that…so these resolutions are, for lack of a better word, fluid.
Resolution #1: Read 36 books (3 books a month). I understand that when one has a baby one is sleep deprived…so come May my book consumption may decline, or I may be super mom and just let my baby cry while I read. Too soon to tell. I want to read more nonfiction, many of my favorite reads from last year were nonfiction…so I think there is something there!
Resolution #2: Pay off my student loans. Guys…I had over six figures in student loans (Neil had a lot too – but we paid those off already!) and I am chipping away one month at a time to get these bad boys paid off. We started aggressively attacking them in June and have brought the amount down significantly and I am cautiously optimistic that we can pay them off this year…maybe even in less time. But I have heard that having a baby cost money. And we need a new car because our two-door Toyota Celica will probably not work for a baby …so it gets tricky. Do we pay off my higher interest rate loans ASAP (6.2%) and then pay only the monthly minimum on the lower interest rate ones (2.2% and 3.0) so we can put more money towards a car? Decisions, decisions. If we cannot pay them off this year…I want the amount we owe, by the end of 2018, to be in the single digits at least.
Resolution #3: put more time into the relationships in my life. As I get older (and wiser and more beautiful) I realize I don’t have time for people in my life that don’t matter. No seriously, why would I waste time on people that mean little to me when I barely have time for the people that mean the most to me? I am done fostering relationships because of a sense of obligation. While I have slowly been gravitating towards this mindset, I am now full-steam ahead. I have a handful of extremely important people in my life and I want to ensure that those people know that I care about them. For example, one of my best friends, Amanda, lives in Colorado. We have not lived in the same state since 2003, yet we have maintained our close friendship for 15 years – why? Because she means the world to me (and I think she likes me too). Same with Katy, Jamie, my undergrad and law school friends. I was fortunate to be able to catch up with a few of them while I was home last week and it reminded me that these are the people who I want to maintain relationships with. I have a hard-enough time seeing Cheryl and Mike and they live right down the hall from us!
Resolution #4: navigating the impending disruption in our lives with patience. I am not sure if you recall but when we got Snoop I had a hard time adjusting…I don’t think I liked her for a few months…well come May we are welcoming a human into the world and I think that adjustment may be just as challenging (probably even more so because I cannot crate train a baby…well…maybe you can??). While we are excited about having a baby, we (or at least I, don’t want to speak for Neil) have moments where we think “what have we done, our lives are over”… so I am a bit of a hot mess. I have a great partner in Neil and we make a good team, so I am going to be cautiously optimistic and declare we are going to dominate parenthood…but more than likely we will fail 100 times a day and I need to be okay with that. While having a baby isn’t a new concept, it is new to us (very new – we don’t know really anything about newborns/kids/toddlers/kids) and while I know we will figure it out…I need to exercise patience.
Resolution #5 – prioritize me and my relationship with Neil. I have heard that when you have a baby you need to be selfless and put the baby first – while that is all fine and dandy, I need to make sure that I continue to take care of myself (physically and (more importantly) mentally) and my relationship with Neil. I get it, our lives will change and everything, but if I don’t work and we (me and Neil) don’t work – then nothing works.
Resolution #6 – get back into running…slowly. I haven’t been doing my Sunday runs because of the holidays and the icy roads, not worth it, but I do miss it. I would love to start running again, more consistently, after I have the baby. I understand that I will be VERY out of shape and I have no expectations except to just start from scratch. Running was not a priority for me in 2017, I have been doing yoga and barre – which has been great, but I do want to flirt with running again come summer time.
That’s it. Those are my resolutions. Many of them are not SMART (specific, measurable, realistic, timely (cannot remember what A stands for)) – but I think this whole year will not be SMART so I am just jumping on the bandwagon now!

The Toyota GR Yaris is better then you think
Toyota is a brand that is recovering very strongly. But not in the financial sense. With one of the world's largest manufacturers and a strong year-end sales report for 2019 in its pocket, Toyota is certainly considering any help. The attack talks about his reputation - his street credibility. The Supra went out of production in 2002 and was followed shortly after by Celica (a shell of the car it once was), with Toyota gaining a reputation for playing it safe and accompanying the lineup without inspiring projects Tracked sales volume. , The 2012 GT86 return was a small step in the right direction, and the 2018 Corolla hatchback signaled Toyota's return to size, but the GR Yaris may be worth more than the 2020 Suppa for Toyota.

It was not fair to see that his company was a milkcast in the United States. So he gave the green lights to cars like the 2020 Supara, led the development of the 2018 Corolla hatchback and led Toyota's new GR (Gazoo Racing) performance field in 2017. Knowing that Toyota has an image problem in the United States and the United States, he is determined to fix it. The GT86 and Supra certainly make a statement as to what kind of cars Toyota can build, but these two-door sports cars are marketed almost exclusively by enthusiasts - a small group of die-hard fans who can afford Neither way represents the average car buyer. Which is a big disappointment given the technical datasheet? It is delivered with a 1.6-liter in-line three-cylinder with 268 hp and 273 lb-ft and is delivered to all four wheels via a six-speed manual transmission. The body gets exaggerated torches and lines and the chassis also gets a GR tune for good dimensions. All of this for around $ 36,000, with the even more powerful version priced at around $ 42,000.
Since Toyota has left no indication that it will ship the GR Yaris to our shores, it has missed an opportunity to help Toyota rebuild its road. Given that Toyota sold only 20,000 Yaris models in the US in 2019, it could be argued that the numbers justify the introduction of a niche model. However, Toyota is already planning to build a small number of GR Yaris in 2020 to reduce damage to shipping. Providing people with a more affordable, accessible and comprehensive option that offers Toyota's best is an easy win. More importantly, the presence of Toyota is another major step in people's eyes. This Just In: Airbag Recalls
A new round of voluntary recalls is affecting more than 5-million vehicles made by Japan’s top two automakers. The problem: airbags.
Toyota is conducting a safety recall of about 2.9 million vehicles. They say the problem is an electronic control unit that may not be adequately protected against certain electrical noise that can occur in certain crashes. Toyota says, “This can lead to incomplete or nondeployment of the airbags and/or seat belt pretensioners.” This voluntary recall affects certain 2011-2019 Model Year Corolla, 2011-2013 Model Year Matrix, 2012-2018 Model Year Avalon, and 2013-2018 Model Year Avalon Hybrid vehicles in the United States. Toyota says dealers will be inspecting the vehicles to see if they need a filter, although the company also says in most cases, dealers will install a noise filter for free. Toyota plans to notify owners by the middle of March.
Another voluntary recall involves 139,000 Toyota vehicles in the United States. In this case the vehicles have a front driver airbag with a single-stage non-azide front driver airbag inflator made by Takata. The announcement by Toyota says, “According to information provided by Takata, the airbag may not deploy properly.” This recall centers around certain vehicles: 1998–2000 Model Year Toyota RAV4, 1998–1999 Model Year RAV4 EV, 1998–1999 Model Year Celica and 1997–1998 Model Year Supra. While Toyota is investigating a way to fix the problem, they’ll notify owners by mail by the end of March.
Honda is also announcing a voluntary recall involving approximately 2.4 million Acura and Honda vehicles in the United States. Although they point out this is “not related to prior Takata airbag inflator recalls” they say this is a “different inflator type with a different defect.”
This situation involves what’s known as NADI inflators. Honda says the inflators were made without appropriate seals, and that “may allow air and moisture to leak into the inflators over an extended period, causing propellant degradation.” If that happens, Honda says during a crash the airbag “may deploy too slowly or, in very rare cases, too forcefully, rupturing and throwing metal pieces of the inflator toward vehicle occupants.”
Honda plans to notify owners about the problem beginning the middle of March, and then again when replacement parts are available.

What’s up with brands building “sporty” economy cars, but refusing to build legit performance cars?
This has been on my mind for a while now. Just as a side note, a lot of what I talk about here is directed at Toyota/Lexus. TLDR at the end because this is gonna be a novel.
My family recently bought a Toyota RAV4 and I have to say it's by far one of the weirdest cars we've owned in a while. Allow me to explain, for a raised, 5-seater, economical compact-crossover, it's a fine car. Where the weirdness comes in is with Toyota's "sporty intentions" with it.
First comes with the harsh ride, and my god is it awful. I've sat in Corvettes and Mustangs and this rides just barely better than those. You feel literally EVERYTHING from lane markers to small bumps (road repairs and that stuff). This thing makes sewer covers feel like a 3-inch deep pothole.
Then when you hop inside, this car has drive modes, which most cars these days have. But the weird thing is this car has a sport mode. Why the hell does a RAV4 need a sport mode? So I can cut my 0-60 time by 0.001 seconds while revving it up to 3k? Or maybe so I can take corners at 25 mph instead of 20, no wait this thing doesn't have variable suspension. Maybe it's so I can hear that beautiful 2.5L 4-cyl singing through my speakers. Jokes aside, I still haven't found out what sport mode really does besides lower my MPG as acceleration seems the same as it is in normal mode. It blows my mind that even the Sienna has a sport trim (yes, I know it has for a while).
Now that brings me to my point, again this is directed more toward Lexus and Toyota. I'm really confused as to why Toyota decides to move and even market their cars as sporty vehicles, while completely ignoring the potential they have in the actual sports car market (not to mention the performance cars in their lineup already). We have a good example of that in the RC F, power wise it's decent, however it's transmission is far too lacking. It shifts so horribly bad, it makes me feel like I'm driving a Camry SE. Funnily enough my RAV4 shifts faster (that 8-speed is pretty quick actually). Many journalists/youtubers have covered this, but the main problem with the RC F is that Toyota refuses it make it into the beast it could be. It's as if they emphasize comfort over performance (despite it being an 'F' model), but market it as a sports car.
Another example is the Lexus IS, more notably the IS 350. It still uses the SAME 3.5L V6 that the previous generation used (I believe they recently rolled out a refreshed version of it for the 2018 model year). My biggest problem is that we never got an IS F version this generation. Just give us an NA V8, dual-clutch IS F and that would sell all day. But what does Lexus give us an F version of? Their GS sedan, which probably shouldn't even exist in their lineup anymore. I have NEVER seen anyone driving around in a GS F. Why? What good does pairing SAME V8 the previous IS F used with a 4000 lb, behemoth of a sedan. What is the intention there, what audience does a car like that target? That makes me wonder why Lexus also didn’t just re-use that engine for a new IS F. Also did I mention the GS F has that same torque-converter the RC F uses?
With Toyota, they only have two performance focused vehicles. One could use a lot of improvement in every aspect (especially in the power department). As for the other, well let's just say people don't call it a Toyota. However, that's not to say that the Supra isn't a legit sports car, I won't take anything away from it. But just like everyone else I have to make mention the fact that the Supra doesn't use a Toyota engine. I'm not going to poke fun or anything as I honestly don't care, but I want to see Toyota/Lexus push out a legit sports car of their own. Something that makes me go, "hey, that could give the M4 a run for its money!" The same brand that gives almost every single of its consumer models an "SE" or "F-Sport" trim, can't even produce a sports car that comes close to the competition (excluding the Supra I guess).
I don't want a Sienna SE that I can shred back roads in, or a RX F-Sport I can run a 12 second quarter mile in. I want an honest to god, 2-door or 4-door sports sedan/coupe with healthy power, no torque converter, good driving dynamics, and NO HYBRID (don't get me started on the LC).
Now I know what you're thinking by now. I'm missing the whole point, as it's more about markets and profit. Obviously a RAV4 is going to sell far more than something like the Supra. My point isn't that Toyota should focus more on building performance vehicles. The point is that if Toyota actually put an effort into building a legit performance car, they could easily rival German sports cars. They're going to win the compact crossover segment for years to come, they’ve already been doing that. But the average person isn't walking into a Toyota dealership to buy a RAV4 because they think it's "sporty." The same reason no one buys an RC F because it's "luxurious." I don't think I'll ever understand Toyota's priorities. Quit giving us grandtourers no one besides new retirees will drive (Looking at the LC). Give enthusiasts a reason to take interest in the brand. Anytime Lexus or even the Supra for that matter comes up in a sports car conversation, it's hard not to laugh.
It’s sad that the brand that once gave us the MKIV Supra, Celica, IS F, 2000 GT and Corolla AE86 has devolved their performance brand into making the Camry look like a sports car (Quad exhausts!!!11).
Sorry I had to just get this out there. This is one of those things I just wake up in the middle of the night and think about. As a Toyota/Lexus guy, this has been annoying.
TLDR; Stop giving us sporty economy cars like the RAV4 SE and RX F-Sport that we don't need/want. Give us something that actually excites us, preferably something that doesn't have BMW written all over it.

Developed by Toyota Gazoo Racing, Toyota’s official motorsports arm, the Supra Race Car Concept is meant to evoke the heritage of a car that dominated GT racing in Japan—a car that became a legend to a legion of fans. Like the Nissan GT-R, the Supra was born from the bones of a more pedestrian car—in its case, the Celica in 1978. From there it would go on to become its own nameplate for three generations: the A60 (1981), A70 (1986), and the A80 (1993), the car that would cement the Supra legacy. The 90 on the side of the race car concept is a nod to continuing that lineage.
We finally have full confirmation that the new Toyota Supra will be a front-engine, rear drive configuration as confirmed by the race car’s design. But we’re going to have to continue to keep speculating about what engine exactly will power the race car or the street car, as Toyota has provided zero information about what is under the hood. As our European correspondent Georg Kacher has reported, our best guess at this point is that the production Supra will feature BMW-sourced powertrain options it will share with the new Z4, likely a version of Munich’s 2.0-liter turbo inline four in the base car, although its long hood suggests BMW’s present 3.0-liter inline six turbo would also fit, which is rated at 355 horsepower in top spec trim. BMW and Toyota have been jointly developing the road-going Supra and BMW’s new Z4 convertible.

The cockpit is all business. There’s the requisite roll cage and fire suppression system, and everything is prepped for serious track duty. Toyota is being coy about what series and sanctioning bodies the car would be cleared to race in, but it’s virtually assured that the actual competition version will be FIA compliant.
